Book Review - Shadow In Serenity

Shadow In Serenity is a novel written by New York Times bestselling author Terri Blackstock. The story is about Carny Sullivan, who grew up in a traveling circus with con-artist parents, helping them to pull cons on people. At the age of 17, she married and settled in the town of Serenity with her husband. After Carny's husband died, she stayed in Serenity with her son Jason because the townspeople and her in-laws accepted and welcomed her, even knowing about her past life.

One day Logan Brisco, a smooth-talking handsome guy, comes to the town of Serenity preparing to con the townspeople out of their money. Everyone falls under his spell except for Carny, who can tell that he's a con artist. Logan is attracted to Carny's looks and personality and tries to persuade her that he isn't a con artist. He starts getting attached to the townspeople and most of all to Carny and Jason. Logan eventually realizes that he can only change his ways if he asks God to cleanse him of his sins, as Carny had done earlier in her life.

My thoughts: The author has a way of making the characters seem real and I could easily visualize how the characters looked because of the thorough descriptions. The storyline caught my interest from the beginning and I liked the interaction between Carny and Logan, especially the part when they both share that they feel God led them to the town of Serenity. There is also a note from the author that explains how this book is actually a rewrite and how/why that happened. This book was enjoyable to read and I would recommend it to others.

craft show season

the Queen Bee Market

October is not only my birthday month but it seems to also mark the beginning of the holiday/craft show season. I've already got a couple of shows lined up for October and got the word this week that I've been accepted as a vendor again at the Queen Bee Market! The Queen Bee Market takes place on November 18 & 19 at the Del Mar Hilton and it is one of my favorite craft shows. All the vendors make a special effort to decorate their spaces and the results are fabulous! Here's a youtube clip I found of the summer show - enjoy!

Book Review - The Corruptible

I recently read The Corruptible by Mark Mynheir, 2nd in the Ray Quinn Mystery Series. I love a good detective story so I was looking forward to reading this book. I was a little concerned about starting the second book without having read the first, but there are enough references made in this book that you'll know what happened in the first. Ray Quinn is a retired detective who has recently opened a private investigation service. He's also an alcoholic, turning to drink after he was shot and became disabled. He's retained by a wealthy businessman to recover some stolen information, which seems like it would be a fairly easy case, but turns complicated when the person who stole the information is found murdered. The dead person also happens to be a dirty ex-cop who Ray was acquainted with.

Ray works to solve the case along with his partner Crevis and some help from a friend named Pam. The book is very detailed about the steps that a detective goes through to solve a crime and that was interesting to read. I felt that the book was a little slow paced but I still found it enjoyable. I look forward to reading the other books in the series and would recommend this book to others.
